BOARDSTOCK - Clear Lake, CA - Aug 20-21 - by Jon Sever
It's Boardstock Bitch!! Was the cry heard on site all weekend. It was without doubt the ultimate no-holds barred joint demo of all time. Imagine freestyle motoXers disrespecting an 80 ft. do-or-die gap over the pavement backflips and all. BMX bikers spinning, flipping, tailwhipping and getting knocked out. The Fusion skydiving team parachuting down with smoke trails trying to land in boats, and release and skim away on wakeboards. Servin it up street show reppin gangsta street bike and harley skills. Wheelies (in circles, one footed standing, sittin on the bars, etc.) endos to 180's,standing on the seat no handers, burnouts, donuts, then smokin tires until they popped. But of course the MBS mountainboarders stole the show. I also heard that there was some wakeboarding happening, but I think that we got most of their audience when we were dropping in. Saturday’s attendance was at 10,000, about 5,000 on land 5,000 on water. It's safe to say that about 3/4 of them were at our shows going nuts, almost too nuts, if that’s possible.
The real beauty of the event was behind the scenes. Each of the four shows needed roughly the size of our one area for their demo alone. Through teamwork with all the athletes on site we fit all four shows into a parking lot of a smaller sized motel. It was an amazing feat as we had a double decker motel right on our left and behind us. And hardcore metal barricades to our tight left, and out front, giving us what we referred to as the “ruckus rectangle”. Prep was the key as Jereme and myself arrived early to bro-down and brainstorm, as Small Dog and J.D. trekked thousands of miles to get the rig on-site at Clear Lake, California. Everytime we found a spot to put the tower something like a giant Red Bull inflatable arch, a new ramp, extra barricades, display boats, trailers, motorcycles, you name it would pop into the picture and put us back to step one. As usual MBS had the right cats to pull it all off. Arrive early, stay on site all day, communication and mutual respect among all the riders made it happen smooth. MBS pretty much owned the area and the show. Our set up consisted of the school tour roll in through the red bull arch (you couldn't see the ramp until you got through the arch) as soon as you landed you hit the BMX jump (hopefully) then straight to the 1/4 pipe. With the MotoX landing on the right, and the barricade on the left the QP was wedged tight and missing it wasn't an option. After the Quarter there was the rail you had to hit which was about 3 feet from the barricade and fans. There was absolutely no room for error, but I managed to find a little. Justin Dersham called the action as Jereme and Small Dog totally owned the demo, absolutely killing it. I almost got killed on my first roll in, but it knocked off the rust, and I pulled it together. Flips are cool, but wrecks are cooler, Right? I guess that depends on which side of the barricade you're on. After the shows we caught the Wake finals. Rusty Malinoski (top pro wakeboarder) won it all, and gave us props on our sport as did hoards of others who would roll out the woodwork saying you guys rule, awesome show, Look it's the mountainboarders! Hawaiin tropic models dig mountainboarders, believe it! All you can eat steak and a concert kept us busy after our last show. Fans were stopping us all night for pics, autographs or just to get us a beer. No doubt we rocked the venue, Dersham rocked the mic, and MBS stole the show. Can't wait until next year.
