BOY SCOUT JAMBOREE FEATURING MOUNTAINBOARDING
MBS helped host the largest Learn to Ride in History at the Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Virginia. An estimated 5,000 Scouts and BSA staff enjoyed mountainboarding.
"MBS Mountainboards were a great addition to the Jamboree. There were up to 600 riders daily, some willing to wait in line for up to 45 minutes to ride down the 'Bunny' and 'Bomber' hill. It was the first new activity we've added in 12 years and it was very popular." De Nguyen, Director of Action Center

THE "WORD" FROM LEON - SCOTLAND COURSE DESCRIPTION

"I just got back from Scotland and got first in both events. The track was like a downhill mountainbike course starting on a fire road then into the woods, down a gnarly single track, off a drop, around a corner, down a wooden step section, over a three foot wide wooden bridge then back onto the road for a half mile and finally to the finish. All of the No-Sno boys were riding with brakes. I beat them by two seconds. It was a good weekend and the weather was great." Leon

RACE TIPS by J Lee
Here are some simple things to practice in order to become a proficient mountainboard racer.
#1 - Pump Rollers - There is a fine line between slowing down over a roller and speeding up. It's all in the timing. Suck it up as you start over it and then compress as you go over. Rollers are a good opportunity to make up some speed if you get a bad start.
#2 - Riding in Traffic - Not with cars but other riders. Become comfortable with riders on your left and right as you head into a berm or jump. One key I've found is to get low. The lower you are the more sturdy you are when you get hit. Practice riding with friends in a tight formation.

#3 - High Speed Berm Manuvering - Different berms call for different approaches. You really need to know where you are going before heading into a berm. Either set up high or low depending on your ability to attack the berm and where other riders are in relation to the berm.
#4 - Gate Starts - This is potentially the most important part of racing. So start doing your push-ups now. It's all in the timing and your upper body strength. You gotta just fly out of the gate as if you're the only one racing. And then hold on for the rest of the race and don't mess up.
#5 - Handling losses - Most of the time in boardercross racing you will not always come in first. But typically as long as you come in second you keep moving on in the race bracket. So even if you lose one of your heats just keep it cool and don't worry about the loss. Just concentrate on your next heat.
#6 - Pace Yourself - There is a fine line between practicing and just wearing yourself out. Make sure to keep in the shade, stay hydrated and only take as many practice runs as you need to be comfortable with the course. Save most of your energy for the real runs, that's when you really need it.

CLEAN UP AND SPEED UP YOUR BEARINGS
Are your bearings running slower than they used to when your board was new? The answer is probably "Yes" if you've been doing any real mountainboarding at all. This is the nature of our sport - STUFF GETS DIRTY. The following MBS Tech Tip shows you the best way to restore your bearings to their original speed (and even make them faster depending on which lubricant you choose to use.
- Step 1: Prepare a work area in a well ventilated spot. Fumes are toxic so this is very IMPORTANT!
- Step 2: Remove black rubber shield from bearing.
- Step 3: Soak your bearings in solvent such as turpentine or gasoline to remove dirt grime and old grease.
- Step 4: Apply the oil or grease of your choice* to bearing. Oil will be faster but needs to be replaced more often to avoid wear to the balls. Grease lasts a long time, but is slower.
- Step 5: Press black rubber bearing shields back into place.
- Step 6: Reinstall bearings in board and go faster than you've ever gone.
* MBS reccomends visiting your local skate shop to see what lubricants they carry. Some good products to look for are BSB High Speed Lube, Bones Speed Cream and Sonic Super Oil.

Send us your Tech Tips or cool ways to tweak your board to jlee@mbs.com and if we post them in future eNewsletters we'll send you a free MBS hat.

Q: How do I get on the MBS Big Air Team? - Justin Waxler - Freemont, CA
A: There are several things you need to be able to do in order to be considered for the MBS Big Air Demo Team. The first of which is that you need to be an awesome all-around rider and especially an awesome freestyle / big air rider. You need to be able to do all the normal grab moves, spins and flips. People love to see backflips. Most importantly you need to be able to do these tricks BIG over hard asphalt surfaces. Additionally you need to be comfortable in front of crowds, smile while riding and shake hands with people of all ages. And finally you need to be a true hard worker. It's a lot of work to set all the equipment up, ride it like crazy then tear it down and move on to the next demo. If you think you meet these requirements please send an email with your resume and pictures or video of yourself for review to Jason Lee.
