Hello riders!

If July is anything like June, watch out! There's so much going on it's hard to fit it all in one newsletter. Races, demos, and festivals all having to do with our favorite sport of mountainboarding are happening around the world. Enjoy!

"Thanks for making such a great product. Getting out on dirt and going up in the mountains is something I have missed ever since I got injured snowboarding 10 years ago. With my sitski mounted to your board I can now pretty much go anywhere and it makes for awesome summer cross-training." Chris Klebl

Worlds First Kiteboardercross Park Launches in Cornwall, UK

On July 9th, 11am, in a sleepy Cornish backwater called Rejerrah, the worlds first Kiteboardercross event kicks off. Riders from around the UK and the local area will meet up to be the first to try the new rider park – called the Skypark.

Kiteboardercross is the ultimate land based kite sport – you ride over varying terrain with your mountain board and kite. The Skypark features kickers, rollers, a wall ride, carveable bowl sections, rails, and a big central mound from which to boost the most ridiculous aerial manuvers. Of course, if you prefer to stay on the ground there are plenty of low level technical features to get your board (and head) around.

The Skypark is a six-acre site, set high above the surrounding fields and gets clean wind exposure from all directions. The short grass and firm ground mean you need less wind to go boarding than you would do on a sandy beach, and because the non kiting public are not allowed in you don’t have to worry about riding through a turd minefield. About as close to kiting nirvana as you may care to get.

For more information on SkyPark visit www.kiteboardercross.com or email Dom at info@kiteboardercross.com

FAN FEST - MBS Big Air Demo - Colorado Springs, CO

J Small goes HUGE in downtown C Springs. After the show Small Dog said "We were jumping so high we were almost were hitting the stoplights." And that was actually very true.
A big thanks goes out to MBS Team Riders Dave Stiefvater, Jason Small and Devin Garland who risked their bodies as usual but had to contend with an unusually narrow landing zone. Our new MC Justin Dersham had the golden voice and kept the excitement going all night. Also thanks to volunteers Tiffany Ecker, Tiffany's friend who looked soooo much like Avril Levine, Cole Shipp, Steve #1, JD, Steve #2 (who I almost knocked off the landing ramp performing the old "knock the bottle off someone's head trick)", Devin's friend and all the other people who just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time.

Wire Board Scuplture - Mountainboards South Africa

"Hey guys, check this out. Wire “art” is a big industry here in South Africa amongst some of our community who find it difficult to get employment. Looking at the detail it takes hours and hours of labour to produce an item like that. Everything is done with a long nose plier and their hands. The chaps name is Joseph who made it, he has the brightest smile I have ever seen."  Basil

THE POWERSLIDE - Heel Side

Before the advent of the MTB braking system there was only way way to stop your board and that was the POWERSLIDE. Still one of the coolest things to do with your board it is a must for any serious rider. When you get good at this you will be able to come to a quick stop in almost any environment.

Step 1: - Get in a normal riding stance. Eyes looking forward and legs slightly bent at the knees. The faster you go the easier it will be to initiate your basic turn.

Step 2:
- Reach down with your trailing hand and grab the toe-side edge of your mountainboard deck and start to initiate the turn. Holding your toe-side egde of your board will help you turn and will give you more stability. I like to call it a "tripod" stance because two feet and one hand is touching the board.

Step 3: - Turn harder into the turn by leaning more on your heel-side edge of your board. Skid out and come to a complete stop. Try to stay standing on your board and not fall down on your butt.

Variations:

Toe Side: Same basic techniques but you will turn towards your toe-side and grab your heel-side edge of your deck.

DEFEAT RUST

An important part of designing a great board is choosing the right materials for the job.  MBS utilizes state of the art materials such as fiberglass composites and high-grade steel and aluminum alloys to build the strongest and lightest mountainboards available. But every material has advantages and disadvantages.  MBS uses 4130 CroMoly steel for all of our axles because this is the strongest and most economical material available for the job, but like most types of steel, CroMoly can rust after time.

Rust, which is caused by the oxidation of the iron contained in the steel, is typically superficial and can be cleaned off easily with an oily rag.  The best way to minimize rust is to keep all steel parts (screws, nuts, springs, axles,...) clean, dry, and well lubricated with oil such as Tri-Flow. How often this needs to be done depends on the environment in which you live and ride.

Due to the wet and salty conditions, coastal areas take an especially hard toll on steel parts.  Therefore, it is important for coastal riders to clean, dry, and oil steel components after every ride.

For people that live and ride in dry climates, keeping your equipment rust-free is easy.  Just clean, dry, and oil your steel components once at the beginning and end of each season. If you see any rust during the season, just wipe it off with an oily rag.

Send us your Tech Tips or cool ways to tweak your board to jlee@mbs.com and if we post them in future eNewsletters we'll send you a free MBS hat.

Q: "What happens if I put a small amount of coffee into a microwave for an extraordinary amount of time." -
J lee

A: This.

Q: How do I get sponsored by MBS? - Jeffery Hidghet

A: Good question. There are basically three things you must consider.

#1 - You need to have a resume, a mug shot and a video or photo portfolio. A website is nice too. Any sponsor whether it's an eywear company of a car company is going to ask for these things. Take your time putting this together and make it as professional as you can.

#2 - Know what you are asking for. Just saying "sponsor me" doesn't give the sponsor an idea of what your are asking for. Are you asking for pro-form pricing, free product, a salary, etc. Be specific.

#3 - Most importantly you have to be a bad ass rider. To get on the MBS Pro Team you must be able to do the following:

-Perform in front of large crowds, and act like you like it.

-Do at least one kind of inverted trick.

-Do at least a 360 spin and it needs to be big and stylish.

-Be a solid boardercross racer. Have good solid starts, know how to ride side by side, know when and when not to go for a pass, etc.

-Be a good example for kids. Having "attitude" is good as long as it is positive.

-Be able to be contacted easily. If we can't get a hold of you how are we going to see if you can do a certain demo for us. Email and cell phone are key.
