Over here in Ireland at the moment while Surfin' Dirt is closed for the winter we are doing a winter downhill series consisting of 4 freeride events. The first of the four events was held in Tollymore Forest Co. Down. In the Seniors category Matt Shaw took 3rd, then Gary Parr scraped 2nd by a mear one second and Brenton English came first. In the Juniors Joel Fox took 3rd, Leo Gorman 2nd and Simon Graham took 1st. In the Ladies Lee Parr took 3rd, Briege Shaw took second and Ally Shaw took 1st.

Irish Winter Downhill Series - Round 2 - Report by John McGuckin

Rider: James Carson

The 2nd event of the four Irish Winter Series events kicked off on the 5th of February at Yellow Water, Rostrevor. With over 25 competitors the event was sure to be a good one. The planned route for the timed runs proved to be too extreme for most people (as it was almost vertical and had 2" gravel most of the way down) so it was decided that we were to pick a less challenging track for the timed runs. After we got the route sorted out we started the timed runs. In the Ladies category Lee Parr came 1st with Briege Shaw closely following. In the Juniors Simon Graham came 1st, Leo Gorman came 2nd and Henry Aiken came 3rd. In the Seniors category (which had 17 competitors, it was the biggest of the 3 categories) Matt Shaw came 1st by a whole 9 seconds, Brenton English came 2nd and Gary Parr came 3rd.

Costa Rica Slopestyle - Feb 25th - A rainout but everyone had fun.

"Well Saturday came and things couldn't have gone better(or could they?) Unfortunately due to an unexpected climate change (actually by now we have learn to expect the unexpected) the Contest was postponed due to rain. The day was not without hope though as just around the time the radio station along with a decent amount of people decided to abandon hope, the sky cleared and the core riders began to "Get it on".

Although a few people were dissappointed that there would be no races, balls were abundant since we had a decent size audience for a killer session in the dirt. Among those in attendance were people representing Adrenalina from Fox Sports, Local TV Station Canal 13, Eco-sport Aventura Magazine, and local English newspaper "The Tico Times".

Riders rode hard not for prizes, but for the pure love of the sport which was our main goal of the day and one of our primary goals in life."

CURB STALL WITH TAIL GRAB - Beginner to Intermediate Trick Tip

For all you flatland tricksters out there here's a relatively easy one to do.

Step 1: Approch a standard sized curb with about 3-5mph of speed. The slower you go the harder it will be to start the endo process but the faster you go the more chances you're just going to flip over. Basically a few mellow pushes into the curb should be good.

Step 2 & 3: Once you make contact with the curb throw your weight forward enough to lift the back wheels off the ground.

Step 3 & 4: As your back end goes higher you will need to level off the endo and stall the board. The idea is to be close to vertical but not quite. At your farthest stall point go for the tail grab. Grab it. Smile and then let the rear end of the board go back to the ground. When you land try to keep some of this backward momentum in order to roll back out from the curb.

Q: "I'm thinking of getting a board for my son but wanted something that we could both ride. I'm 6' and weigh 170lbs and my son is 5' and weighs about 115lbs. What do you suggest?"

- Mick Kittlesven, Bracketville, TX

A: A great board to start with that can accomodate both your sizes is the Core 8. It's a great board and a great value. What you'll need to do is adjust the bindings a bit for each of your foot sizes and adjust the tension on the trucks for your weight. Both these adjustments are easy to do. Good luck and good riding!

NEW!! ENVELOPE DESIGN CONTEST OK. Just do a killer drawing, painting or collage on a letter and send it in. Rules: The art must be MBS or mountainboard related and it must make it through the mail. The winner will receive 50 MBS Bucks and their art will be posted in April's eNews! Good Luck!
