2005 US Open Mountainboarding Championships
A Snapshot
By Dan Dworkin
Everyone who came to the US Open agreed, the event just keeps getting bigger and better. The track was dialed in and taking names and the slopestyle arena was completely unique to any US event ever. The band on Thursday, the screening of Riding Giants on Friday, and the parties on Saturday night built momentum with the event and had people raging well through to Sunday morning. For those eager enough to keep riding before heading out Sunday, or took advantage of the free chairlift throughout the week, Snowmass big mountain freeriding was there for the taking, with more possibilities than anyone could ever imagine.
At the top of the track there was little trash-talking, people were nervous, scared, or both, and the track was seen as “thrilling” by some riders and “down right dangerous” by others. Jason Lee took a couple heavy tumbles during his heats and commented after the event, “That was one of the most challenging tracks we've ever raced on. Especially when you have to go balls out to stay up with some of the top competitors. The course had it all: air spots, high speed sections and technical features.” Leon Robbins, added in, “You can spend just as much time on the ground as you do in the air.” Clearly, this was the pro-level course riders had been waiting for.
The Slopestyle competition fit in to the day perfectly. After some amazing DBX finals, a two-hour break was taken for lunch and a passing Colorado hail storm. The moisture improved the terrain and the show that followed was impressive. From the groms to the pros everyone had something to ride and the options for lines after the landings allowed rail and park riders something more familiar. The duels by competitors pushed everyone a little more and the good spirit spread to the crowd, cheering just as loudly for the youngest riders as they did for the oldest. In the end, familiar names were on the podium and a whole gang of up and coming riders are gaining strength to knock someone’s medal away from them next year.
As Sunday passed to evening and the sun faded a few riders made their way down the mountain long after the chairlift had closed. Amongst the three was Jason Smalls, one of the top finishers in both disciplines of the pro division. “This is real mountainboarding,” Jason said smiling. “As for next year’s comp, it’s just going to get better between now and then.”
